The Best Travel Hats For Men and Women

These are the 5 best travel hats for men and women

I’ll admit it. I was born in the wrong era. I am a hat person, and often wish it was still perfectly acceptable to wear a jaunty, beribboned cloche to Walgreens. Which is why I never take a trip without my most favorite hats, albeit, ones that are modern and completely functional. Heading to a lovely, sunny destination? Cool and wide-brimmed, please. Maybe also a ball cap or a cadet hat. Frigid temperatures on the horizon? A soft and fuzzy beanie for sure, plus a little something just for my ears. The Dear Husband never travels without something manly and appropriate for the season, and the kiddo has been reared to choose sun protection over a sunburn (lest he incur the wrath of his mother). Below are a few great recommendations for both men and women, and the best travel hats for easy packing and happy sightseeing.

SUN HATS

1. Chaos Women’s Summit Breeze Crushable Straw Hat

Sun hats are your best friend when you’re spending long hours outside, and those that are lightweight and can be packed flat are the way to go. Look for one like this faux straw 50/50 polyester/cotton blend. It has a 4.5 inch wide brim, a 30+ UPF rating, and a contrasting under-brim to help reduce glare.

2. DPC Outdoor Design Men’s Oil Cloth Big Brim Safari Hat

For men, you can’t beat a hat like this stylish Indiana Jones-ish fedora. The cotton fabric is blended with waxes and oils for rain, wind, and dust protection. It also has a 50+ UPF in addition to a 3″ brim.

3. Columbia Sportswear Bora Bora Booney II Unisex Sun Hat

Rick wore this hat while sailing for a week in the Florida Keys. He gives it a thumbs up for the lightweight nylon and its ability to retain its shape even after being crushed in a duffel bag. The hat has a sweat band and UPF 50 sun protection. A chin strap with a cord and toggle is also handy in the wind. It comes in several colors, including bright blue.

BALL CAPS

4. Talson Removable Flap Breathable Cap

This hat offers a nice marriage between a ball cap and a sun hat. Our teenager favors this cap, and wears it with the detachable, wrap-around flap when he’s camping or spending time outside. The flap bottoms can be snapped at the chin, and the brim is fairly deep, at almost 4″ long. It comes with a mesh face mask, which certainly would offer extra sun protection, but honestly, it spends most of its time in the closet. Made of 100% nylon, it comes in a few muted colors, and fits the average adult’s head.

BEANIES

5. Funky Junque’s CC Confetti Unisex Knit Beanie

For cold destinations, who doesn’t want a cute, colorful beanie to keep their head warm? This warm, thick, soft, acrylic beanie comes in 18 colors, including more sedate browns, blacks, and grays for the men. It’s also a steal at under $13.

BONUS ITEM

6. Sprigs Earbags

Yes, I realize these do not qualify as a hat, but they ARE worn on the sides of your head, after all. Plus, I would be remiss if I did not share these with you… because they are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE, never-leave-home-without-them item when traveling to a cold location. These really are the best little ear muffs… fitting comfortably over your ears with a gentle snap, without the annoying, plastic headband thingy. They come in a slew of colors and patterns, and can be worn by themselves (very discreetly under your hair) or in conjunction with a hat. For those of you who get ear aches just thinking about a cold wind, these need to be in your pocket at all times!
